Hardwood Logs
Jeffers Farms owns and manages 1,300 acres of hardwood and softwood forests located in northeastern Pennsylvania. We also purchase timber rights from private land owners for timber harvesting and provide sound forestry advice for proper stewardship of their forest lands.
Jeffers Farms applies modern forestry practices such as select cuts, low grade thinning, forest sustainability, and total tree utilization combined with sound silvicultural conventions to ensure a healthy residual stand for the future.
Jeffers Farms, Inc. uses a wide range of log markets to produce the most profit from its own lands and for private lands under its management. Hardwood markets consist of selling high-grade veneer and rotary grade veneer(Export saw logs)to buyers right from our landings. The high grade saw logs are sold to local sawmills. Low-grade logs down to 8" in diameter are sold to markets located in Canada. White Ash is sold to specific ash markets only for the production of dowels. Softwood markets include the harvesting of red pine for telephone poles and low grade landscaping ties. Spruce, Douglas Fir, Scotch Pine, and Hemlock are sold for lumber and pulp.

Harvest Techniques Used by Jeffers Farms in its Timber Operation
Jeffers Farms uses a John Deere 540D cable log skidder to pull the trees away from the stumps. This machine is highly maneuverable and reduces damage to the residual stand. The log skidder pulls the logs to a Tree Farmer forwarder. Here the logs are bucked into length and separated by grade for the appropriate markets. The use of this machine reduces soil disturbance and is sensitive to wet areas by reducing trips through the woods. All tree felling is completed with the use of chainsaws by experienced crews with SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) training in silviculture and low disturbance felling. Our crews and foresters are SFI trained and extremely environmentally conscience.
